What is Zoorkhaneh?
Zoorkhaneh, also known as Pahlavāni, is an ancient Iranian sport with roots dating back to more than 4,000 years. It combines strength, coordination, rhythm, poetry, and philosophy. In 2010, it was inscribed on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list.
Zoorkhaneh is grounded in the core ethic of “Javānmardī”, which refers to the code of the courageous youth who are called to safeguard the vulnerable and uphold communal values of altruism and respect. Therefore, “We Are Zoorkhaneh” seeks to renew that spirit and model societies across religious, political, and cultural differences.
“We Are Zoorkhaneh” is a non-profit, non religious & nonpolitical organization. We believe that sports is not just a hobby, but a powerful tool for peace and inclusion.

Working at the intersection of culture, identity and belonging, WAZ envisions more cohesive and resilient society in Washington State, enhancing diversity, gender equity, and intercultural dialogue through sports as a universal language.

The organization’s goals include promoting and preserving the heritage of Zoorkhaneh, amplifying cultural exchange across communities, advocating against gender apartheid in sports, sharing Iranian and Persianate cultural heritage, countering disinformation, and fostering collaboration with aligned organizations and partners.

WAZ is dedicated to creating spaces where Iranian/Persianate communities and the general public can together celebrate and learn about the cultural heritage.

We believe that access to sports can empower individuals and communities alike, fostering peace, connection, and hope. Beyond physical activity, sport creates spaces where individuals can build confidence, discipline, and a sense of belonging. It teaches perseverance in the face of challenges, encourages teamwork and mutual respect, and helps people develop the emotional and mental strength needed to overcome adversity.

We actively fight for intentional inclusion and diversity to build a strong community. Diversity includes but is not limited to race, ethnicity, nationality, religion, socioeconomic status, gender identity, sexuality, disability, and age.

We recognize that access to sports is not equal around the world, and that sports is a powerful tool for personal growth, independence, and happiness. We support women and girls worldwide in pursuing their own self-defined success in sports.
